All your own: the first SSD-controller on the Chinese Godson architecture is presented

For China, the mass production of controllers for the production of SSDs is as important as the organization of home production of NAND flash memory and DRAM. Limited production of 32-layer 3D NAND and DDR4 chips has already started in the country. And what about the controllers?

According to the site EXPreview, in China, about ten companies are developing controllers for SSDs. They all use some combination of cores or ARM architecture (instruction sets). But one company managed to surprise: the other day, a national developer from China introduced controllers based on the first Chinese Godson microprocessor architecture.

The Godson architecture or cores became the basis of the Loongson processors, which received wide correspondence in absentia. The Godson architecture relies on MIPS instructions and is, in principle, no worse for SSD controllers than the ARM architecture. The controller on IP Godson was created by the Chinese company Guokewei. These are GK2302 solutions with SATA 6 Gb/s interface and operating speed up to 500 MB/s.

According to the company, the Godson IP GK2302 controller is 15% more productive than the previous ARM core design (GK2301) and consumes 6,5% less power. There is no other information about GK2302 yet. For reference, the GK2301 supports four channels of LDPC error correction memory and allows you to create SSDs up to 4TB (up to 32 MLC/TLC/QLC NAND chips). Supported interfaces are ONFI 3.0/Toggle 2.0, as well as SM2/3/4 (national standard) and SHA-256/AES-256 encryption. Something similar can be expected from the new controller.

A few words about Guokewei. It was organized in 2008, although it entered the securities exchange only in 2017. The company specializes in the development of chips for set-top boxes, storage systems, controllers for sensors and things with an Internet connection. In 2018, Guokewei's turnover was about $57,68 million. At the same time, the company receives subsidies from Chinese government funds, which allows it to move forward without regard to profitability.
