Sega and developer Ryu Ga Gotoku have released the seventh edition of the Yakuza series. In Japan, the project is called Ryu Ga Gotoku 7, but in the West it will be released under the name Yakuza: Like a Dragon.
It is being developed exclusively for the PlayStation 4 and will release in Japan on January 16, 2020. The game will be released later in the year in the US and Europe. For the first time in over a decade, we will be introduced to a new protagonist. They will be a low-ranking yakuza Ichiban Kasuga, seeking to prove his worth. “This is a story about him, about his diverse team of associates and their attempts to hit the jackpot,” the authors say. “Like the new English title itself, this game is an important reinvention and the beginning of a new milestone, which coincides with the series’ fifteenth anniversary.”
Much of the story will take place in Ijincho, a huge area in the city of Yokohama, where players will have to explore a completely new area of Japan that we have never seen before in this series. However, for many fans the biggest surprise will be a completely redesigned combat mechanics. In Yakuza: Like a Dragon, instead of the usual real-time brawls, turn-based battles are waiting for us.
“The appearance and voices of the key characters of the game will be given by the actors Shinichi Tsutsumi, Ken Yasuda and Kiichi Nakai, the main character Ichibana Kasuga will be voiced by Kazuhiro Nakaya,” the developers add.
