XLibre lead developer Enrico Weigelt has tabled a proposal to implement a Vulkan extension for X11 that would combine network transparency at the X11 protocol level with low-latency GPU rendering of the interface. The proposal calls for the creation of a libvulkan middleware layer that would handle client-side rendering of X protocol data via the GPU. This mechanism is proposed as an alternative to GLX and DRI.
The proposal is still in the initial discussion phase; Enrico hopes to clarify the need for this solution with the community. The project is currently undergoing extensive refactoring to remove intermediate abstraction layers, legacy C language standards, and Wayland-related solutions.
