According to a service monitoring international communication channels, global network capacity increased by 25% in 2025 to reach 1835 Tbit/s, more than double the 2021 level. The largest growth in international network capacity over the past four years has been observed in Africa (38%) and the Middle East (27%).
The growth of internet traffic in recent years has been driven by factors such as the proliferation of internet-enabled consumer devices, broadband penetration in developing countries, and the growth of bandwidth-intensive applications.
Factors that could impact international internet traffic in the future include: cloud services for AI and access to GPU power; the implementation of private backbone networks that do not use public communication channels in the infrastructure of companies developing content delivery networks, data centers, and cloud services; the development of services dependent on direct connections to content providers; the use of traffic caching systems; regional content localization; and a reduction in the cost of transit traffic after the introduction of new international networks.
