"Medium" is the first decentralized Internet provider in Russia

It is unlikely that any of the local inhabitants does not know the very ambiguous and already sensational order by bill о "sovereign Runet".

In this article, I would like to share with Habr readers information about a decentralized provider already operating in Russia, which allows you to view network resources I2P, as well as invite citizens interested in this matter to join the project and raise their access point.

All the most interesting is under the cut.

"Medium" is the first decentralized Internet provider in Russia

What is this?

The Medium project was originally conceived as mesh network в Kolomna urban districtHowever, after some time it became very obvious that there were not enough people willing to take part in this to implement the idea.

For this reason, after some time, Medium turned into an independent and free provider of access to the I2P network - enthusiasts configure their wireless access points so that when connected to them, it becomes possible to use the resources of the I2P project.

From a security point of view, this approach has some fundamental drawbacks - for example, you can freely listen to traffic between the subscriber and the router to which he is currently connected. It should be noted that the Tor has a similar problem - only with respect to exit nodes.

This problem is leveled by using the transport layer of security - TLS, SSL, Et cetera - this is quite enough to feel confident when using network resources. And, of course, we should not forget about PGP and principles of operation of asymmetric cryptography in messaging.

Thanks to the use of I2P, it becomes impossible to calculate not only the router where the traffic came from (see. basic principles of "garlic" traffic routing), but also the end user — the Medium subscriber.

As a nice bonus - the impossibility of blocking the network and access to the computing resources of its participants - for this it is necessary to limit the operation of the entire Internet at the physical level. Turn it off and don't turn it on again.

From a legal point of view (according to Federal Law No. 97-FZ of May 5, 2014.), located on the territory of the Russian Federation, “Medium” may partially fall under the restrictions imposed by law, but here it makes sense to take into account the following nuances:

  1. "Medium" is not a legal entity; each participant is an autonomous ISP with the same name;
  2. Access points to "Medium" may be open (they do not have a password for connecting by default), but hidden: a person who does not know the name of the network will not be able to connect to it;
  3. "Medium" provides access to the I2P network, not the Internet (although it is possible to access the network through outproxy - at the discretion of the current operator "Medium"; for the same reason, "Medium" can be safely called ISP).

Why is that?

We believe that the Internet should be politically neutral and free - the principles on which the World Wide Web was built - do not stand up to scrutiny. They are obsolete. They are not safe. We live in Legacy. Any centralized network is compromised by default - and this is one of the reasons why we deploy "Medium".

We believe that confidentiality is one of those foundations without which a calm and measured human life is impossible.

We believe that everyone has the right to privacy and privacy of their data.

We believe that "Medium" will be able to provide all possible assistance to the development of the I2P network - after all, with each new raised point of "Medium", a new transit node appears in the I2P network.

How is it?

The essence of the decentralized ISP "Medium" is to provide the end user with the opportunity to use the resources of the I2P network without directly paying for Internet traffic.

The concept of ISP "Medium" is quite prosaic - a lot of people interested in this raise their wireless access points to the I2P network without the ability to view Internet traffic by default (the ability to use outproxy is not forbidden, but not welcome: "Medium" should contribute to the growth of transit points and sites on the I2P network). The deployment of infrastructure is free of charge - pure enthusiasm.

At the very beginning of the development of the project, special attention was paid to the fact that users could freely use the resources of the I2P network - albeit not quite as it was intended when creating the concept of the "invisible Internet", but still bypassing the paradigms of the Internet we are used to - which is already good .

And also so that the connection of the subscriber to the network does not present any particular difficulties: the ability to connect via Wi-Fi now does not seem to be something supernatural for the average user.

What we have: volunteers (system operators), who control the access points to the Medium network and directly the subscribers themselves, who use the network resources. Due to the fact that I2P uses only a small part of the bandwidth of the common channel, it should not be difficult for system operators to keep up to 5-10 subscribers connected to themselves at the same time.

Where is it?

At this stage of development, "Medium" has several access points in Kolomna and one in Samara.

We look forward to the active contribution of the community to the development of the Medium project - instructions for raising your authentic point can be found here. There you can also send a PR to add your point to the public list of all points in the network.

I want to become a volunteer! What do I need to do for that?

Raise your access point and join project discussion on GitHub. This thread discusses all the most significant nuances of the long-term development of the Medium network.

Our friendsThank you theklacy for the deployment of access points in Samara.
