Arnd Bergmann, responsible for kernel packages at SUSE, has prepared patches that remove approximately 55,000 lines of kernel code related to support for legacy ARM platforms that are rarely used and interfere with the maintenance of current subsystems. The platforms slated for removal include the sa1100, omap24xx, i.MX31, samv7, lpc18xx, riscpc, axxia, footbridge, older pxa, orion, dove, and mv78xx0 boards, chips without a memory management unit (MMU), and stm32f4/f7/h7 microcontrollers. These platforms are slated for removal in kernel 7.5, expected in Q1 2027, to avoid the need to remove them in the LTS kernel and to give users time to declare their continued use of certain systems to prevent their removal.
