Former National Security Agency contractor Harold Martin, 54, was sentenced Friday in Maryland to nine years in prison for stealing vast amounts of classified material belonging to US intelligence agencies over a twenty-year period. Martin signed a plea agreement, although prosecutors never found evidence that he shared classified information with anyone. District Judge Richard Bennett also gave Martin three years of supervised release.
Martin was working for a major American consulting company, Booz Allen Hamilton Holding Corp., when he was arrested in 2016. Edward Snowden also worked here for some time, and in 2013 he handed over to news organizations a number of secret files exposing NSA spying activities.
During a search of Martin's home south of Baltimore, FBI agents found stacks of documents and electronic media containing up to 50 terabytes of classified information relating to the activities of the NSA, CIA and US Cyber ββCommand from 1996 to 2016, prosecutors said. According to lawyers, Martin was sick with Plyushkin syndrome (syllogomania), which is expressed in a pathological passion for hoarding.
