Carbon, EVE Online's engine, has gone open source

Fenris Creations, formerly known as CCP Games, has opened the source code Carbon - our own engine on which they work EVE Online и EVE Frontier. On the official website Carbon is described as a cross-platform framework for building large virtual worlds, where key components can be studied, used, and improved by the community.

This is not just a single demo module, but a set of organizational repositories. CARBON Engine on GitHub: Trinity, Destiny, Scheduler, Core, IO, audio components, resource tools and other parts of the infrastructure. Trinity is responsible for the Carbon graphics engine and is published under MIT license, but it is specifically stated that it does not grant rights to CCP/Fenris trademarks and game content. Destiny It is described as a game world simulation core for the EVE family of MMOs and is also distributed under the MIT license.

Fenris distinguishes Destiny as a physics and pathfinding system, powering EVE's record-breaking massive PvP battles, including battles involving thousands of players. CarbonIO is responsible for the networking layer, CarbonUI for the interface, CarbonAudio for audio processing in crowd scenes, and the scripting is based on Python.

However, this does not mean that you can now simply build a free EVE Online from source. For example, Destiny's README clearly states, which requires Perforce dependencies and the CCP_EVE_PERFORCE_BRANCH_PATH variable for compilation. Fenris explains the opening of Carbon as a focus on transparency and longevity: the engine was created for living worlds capable of surviving for decades, and open source should allow developers to explore and build on this foundation.
