Nitrux 5.0.0, a package-based distribution, has been released. Debian and supplied with the OpenRC initialization system. The full bootable image is 3.3 GB in size. The project's work is distributed under open source licenses.
Previously, the project developed its own NX Desktop, implemented as an add-on to KDE Plasma, but now the distribution has switched to supplying a new user environment built on the basis of a composite Server Hyprland, Waybar and Crystal Dock panels, Wofi application menu, and Wlogout system shutdown menu. A composite screen is available for launching games. server Gamescope, developed by Valve, uses Sway Notification Center for notifications and SwayOSD for on-screen indicators.
The Hyprland composite server uses Wayland and offers features for creating visually appealing interfaces, including gradients in window frames, background blur, animation effects, and shadows. Plugins can be added for extended functionality, and socket-based IPC is provided for external control. Configuration is handled via a configuration file, with changes updated on the fly without restarting. Other notable features include dynamically created virtual desktops; on-screen layout modes; global hotkey handling; and touchpad/touchscreen gesture control.
Other changes in the Nitrux 5.0 release:
- For installing additional programs, the NX AppHub toolkit and the AppBox format are used, which are promoted as preferable to the previously used AppImage format. In addition to AppBox, Flatpak and Distrobox are also supported for installing programs.
- The root partition in the distribution is now mounted in read-only mode, and changes are applied using the NX Overlayroot toolkit (a fork of Overlayroot).
- Instead of the SDDM display manager, the greetd login manager and the QtGreet login screen are used to start the session.
- In addition to the kernel package LinuxVersion 6.17.7, which ships with Liquorix patches, features a kernel variant from the CachyOS project. Support for the "sched_ext" (SCX) mechanism has been added, allowing the use of eBPF for creating CPU schedulers.
- The nwg-look interface is used to edit GTK3 settings, and nwg-displays is used to configure the output.
- Added open source kernel modules for NVIDIA GPUs developed by NVIDIA.
- The background process Hyprscreend is used to adaptively change the screen frequency.
- The package includes the Grimshot screenshot program and the Ark archiver.
- The following utilities have been removed from the distribution: cmus, devmem2, ftp, kdotool, and irqbalance. Waydroid, Kvantum Manager, KDEConnect, Fcitx, AMD ROCm, dbab, DNScrypt-proxy, 0Install, Touchegg, PPPD, AIDE, Tor, torsocks, xpadneo, as well as components for SPICE protocol support and the Hyper-V hypervisor, have been discontinued.
