“This brand is very important to us”: the head of Koch Media explained why Dead Island 2 is taking so long to be made

More than five years have passed since the announcement of Dead Island 2, but the game still does not even have an approximate release date. During this time, the project has changed several developers - now the British Dambuster Studios, which created Homefront: The Revolution. In a recent interview GamesIndustry.biz Klemens Kundratitz, CEO of Deep Silver publisher Koch Media, explained why it is in no rush to release the game.

“This brand is very important to us”: the head of Koch Media explained why Dead Island 2 is taking so long to be made

“Dead Island is a very important brand for us, so we have to get it right,” the executive said. “[And the fact that we're not in a hurry] just proves that we care about quality. It's not very nice to talk about the project moving on to a third studio, but we want our decisions to be judged by the end result. We have full confidence that [Dead Island 2] will make a great zombie game. We give it all our strength."

Dead Island 2 was announced at E3 2014. Polish studio Techland, which created the series, planned to develop the game itself, but later decided to focus on Dying Light. Deep Silver signed an agreement with Germany's Yager Development, which was expected to complete development by the second quarter of 2015. However, due to creative differences with the publisher, production stopped, and in the spring of 2016 the game got a new developer - the British Sumo Digital. Another attempt failed, and in August of this year THQ Nordic, bought Koch Media, along with the rights to all its franchises, announced that the project has been transferred to Dambuster Studios.

According to Kundratitz, there was no conflict between Koch Media and Techland. On the contrary, the publisher continues to work closely with Polish developers: it will act as a distributor of Dying Light 2, which will be released in spring 2020. “We could talk about conflict if we were going to release [Dead Island and Dying Light 2] at the same time,” he noted. “But that won’t happen.”

Deep Silver showed gameplay of Dying Light 2 at Gamescom 2014. It is possible that the current version of the game is very different from the one presented at the exhibition. The events took place in California - in Santa Monica, Hollywood, San Francisco. It was planned to have four controllable characters, as in previous parts, but support for eight users was announced for the cooperative mode.

In the same conversation, Kundratitz promised that details of the new Saints Row, which is being developed by THQ Nordic confirmed in August, will be published next year.

Obviously, Dead Island 2 will not be released until the second half of 2020. Most likely, it will appear not only on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4, but also on new consoles.
