Facebook fined $1,6M in Brazil in Cambridge Analytica case

The Brazilian Ministry of Justice said in a statement on its website that the decision to impose punitive sanctions was made after it was found that Facebook was illegally exchanging user data from Brazil. An investigation launched last April found that the data of some 443 users of the Facebook platform was being used "for questionable purposes."

It is worth noting that Facebook may still try to appeal this decision. Earlier, company representatives stated that developers' access to users' personal data was limited. “There is no evidence that user data from Brazil was shared with Cambridge Analytica. We are currently conducting a legal assessment of the situation," a Facebook spokesperson said.

Recall that the scandal related to the illegal exchange of user data between Facebook and the British consulting company Cambridge Analytica flared up in 2018. Facebook was investigated by the US Federal Trade Commission, which fined the company a record $5 billion. The investigation found that the consulting firm had wrongfully collected data on more than 50 million Facebook users and then used it to study the political preferences of potential voters and broadcast relevant advertising.
