Innovative robotic underwater complex will be created by Russian scientists

Network sources report that the development of an underwater robotic complex is carried out by scientists from the Institute of Oceanology. Shirshov RAS together with the engineers of the company "Underwater Robotics". The innovative complex will be formed from an autonomous vessel and a robot controlled remotely.

The new complex will be able to function in several modes. In addition to connecting via the Internet, you can use a radio channel for control, being within radio visibility, as well as satellite communications. The maximum distance of removal of the complex from the operator directly depends on what type of connection to the robotic system is used.

Currently, there are remotely controlled systems, which are controlled by cable by an operator located on the shore or ship. There are also autonomous surface vessels capable of moving along a given trajectory. The Russian system will combine the capabilities of such complexes. The robotic system can be anywhere, receiving commands from the operator via one of the available communication channels. Also, at the command of the operator, an apparatus capable of shooting and exploring the surrounding space descends under the water. Evgeny Sherstov, Deputy Director of the Underwater Robotics company, spoke about this. He also added that at present there are no analogues to the Russian complex in the world.    

The considered complex is formed from surface and underwater parts. We are talking about a catamaran with an autonomous control system and hydroacoustic equipment, as well as an underwater drone equipped with various sensors and cameras. The underwater vehicle was named "Gnome", it is connected to the catamaran by a cable, the length of which is 300 m. Currently, the operating layout of the complex is undergoing a series of tests.

The developers say that the robotic system can be used to inspect lakes, bays and other bodies of water where there is no strong excitement. An underwater drone is capable of taking photos and videos, looking for the necessary items at the bottom of reservoirs. It is noteworthy that the submersible does not need to explore the entire bottom, since initially the vessel can carry out a sonar survey of the bottom, finding the most interesting places for further research. The technology may be of interest to underwater archaeologists, and it will be useful when inspecting ships and drilling rigs.
