The developer of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare commented on the situation with the Russians and the Highway of Death

Studio Infinity Ward explained one of the controversial aspects of the campaign Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

In one of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare missions, you will hear a character in the game talking about the Highway of Death. She said the road leading to the mountains had been bombed by the Russians to kill anyone trying to escape.

Players immediately noticed the similarities between the Highway of Death from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and his real analogue. During the first Gulf War, the United States and its allies bombed highways to prevent what they said was an attempt by Iraqi troops to retreat. But multiple witnesses say the victims included families, immigrants and other civilians.

Shifting the blame to the Russians, although the game takes place in a fictional country, perceived by some as a rewriting of history. In an interview with GameSpot, narrative director Taylor Kurosaki explained that this was not the team's intention.

According to Kurosaki, the borrowing of this real-world element should not be taken literally.

"I think you could probably find many examples of the words 'High of death,'" Kurosaki said. “The reason why Urzikstan is a fictional country is because we take themes from the last 50 years that we can play over and over again in countries and places around the world. […] We're not making a simulation of one specific country or a specific conflict, these are themes that play out over and over again, and with many of the same players. We don't portray either side as good or bad."

Kurosaki also noted that the Highway of Death is not so much a plot element, but something that exists in the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare universe.

“If you go back and start at the beginning of the mission, Farah talks about this place—the Highway of Death—before the mission takes place,” he said. - So, the Highway of Death did not appear in this mission, it already existed. If you look at the narrative, there are already bombed vehicles, and all this relates to previous episodes."

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was released on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on October 25, 2019.
