Release of the decentralized communication platform Hubzilla 4.6

After 3 months of development submitted release of a platform for building decentralized social networks hubzilla 4.6. The project provides a communication server that integrates with web publishing systems, equipped with a transparent identity system and access controls in Fediverse decentralized networks. The project code is written in PHP and Javascript and spreads under the MIT license.

Hubzilla supports a single authentication system for social networking, forums, discussion groups, wikis, article publishing systems and websites. Also implemented is a WebDAV-enabled data store and CalDAV-enabled event handling.

Federative interaction is carried out on the basis of its own Zot protocol, which implements the concept of WebMTA for content transmission via the WWW in decentralized networks and provides a number of unique features, in particular transparent end-to-end "Nomadic Identity" authentication within the Zot network, as well as a clone function to provide completely identical entry points and user data sets on various network nodes . Exchange with other Fediverse networks is supported using the ActivityPub, Diaspora, DFRN and OStatus protocols.

In the new release, in addition to traditional improvements to existing functions and capabilities, as well as corrections discovered over the period that has passed since the previous release, a new β€œWorkflow” extension has been added. It is a tool for implementing a system of interaction between participants. Among its areas of application, it is expected to be used as an error tracking system, while supporting all federated functions of the main platform.

Among the most notable changes In the new release it should be noted:

  • Continuation of the migration process to the current version of the ZotVI protocol, the reference version of which is being developed as part of a related project Zap. The full transition is planned for release 5.0, which is expected to be released in the first quarter of next year.
  • Expanded Opengraph support for publications to now include articles.
  • Improved support for working via CDN.
  • The extension for caching external images has been significantly redesigned and optimized for speed and resource consumption.
  • Identified problems with interaction with a number of services using the ActivityPub protocol have been fixed. The Hubzilla interface has also been improved to work with networks that do not support β€œNomadic Identity”.
  • The capabilities of cross-posting Hubzilla publications to external platforms and social networks, in particular Twitter and Livejournal, have been expanded.
  • Added limited support for embedding SVG images directly into publications using BBcode markup.
  • Supports automatic discovery of CalDAV and CardDAV services.
  • A full translation of the interface into Japanese is included.

Active work is underway to transfer the Hubzilla event notification system to the Server Side Events mechanism, which should increase the speed and reliability of delivery, as well as reduce the load on the front end.
In addition, the developers report that they are considering options to migrate the main project repository from the current Framagit, maintained by a non-profit organization Framasoft, due to its planned closure in mid-2021.
