The Fedora Project Governing Board (Fedora Council) has announced the suspension of the Community Initiatives process, which was created to implement large, long-term projects within the distribution that do not fit within the six-month Fedora release cycle. LinuxCommunity Initiatives were intended to focus community efforts on implementing big ideas and to secure necessary resources and support from the Governing Board. Projects already launched through the Community Initiatives process, such as Fedora Forge, Atomic, and Fedora Docs 2026, will continue to operate with the full support of the Governing Board and will be completed according to plan.
The suspension of Community Initiatives stemmed from issues related to a lack of proper community feedback that arose during the approval process for the Fedora AI Developer Desktop project, which was approved despite significant objections during community discussions. While community members were expected to reach out to the Governing Board if they had concerns about upcoming decisions, the Board was not informed of any potential issues and voted without taking community input into account.
The Community Initiatives process has been deemed ineffective and suspended pending the creation of a new mechanism that will allow for open and transparent advancement of strategic projects, taking community input into account. The new mechanism is expected to engage the community in early discussions of projects, rather than requiring them to do so after a decision has already been made.
One potential reform option being considered is the creation of a "sandbox" to facilitate testing new ideas and experimenting with new technologies within the distribution, without risking the stability of the main project. The sandbox will allow innovative development ideas for the distribution to be developed side by side with the main distribution.
Projects developed in the sandbox will be integrated into the main distribution once certain conditions are met, their value to the project is confirmed, and other developers are interested. The lifecycle of experimental technologies involves several stages of development, with reviews at timed milestones and transition to the next stage once the criteria for each stage are met.
Regarding the Fedora AI Developer Desktop project to create atomically updated desktop editions of Fedora Linux For developers using and developing AI technologies, its discussion is closed due to the ineffectiveness of the Community Initiative mechanism. The initiators of this project are advised to try another approach. Once the project matures, it will be eligible for official Fedora release status through recognition as a Remix release after submitting a trademark application and approval by the FESCo technical committee. Until then, the initiative will remain an independent development, not an official Fedora project.
