Video: new acquisition of Boston Dynamics will help robots see in 3D

Although Boston Dynamics robots have been the main characters in intriguing and sometimes frightening videos, they have not yet become a part of everyday life. This may change soon. With the acquisition of Kinema Systems, Boston Dynamics has taken a big step toward bringing its robots that move boxes in warehouses, run, jump, and wash dishes into the real world.

Kinema is a Menlo Park company that uses deep learning to give a robotic arm the XNUMXD vision needed to locate and move boxes. Pick technology can recognize different products and handle boxes of different sizes, even if they are not ideal shapes.

With this purchase, Boston Dynamics now has the software needed to make its robots more practical outside of ideal laboratory conditions. In other words, they may indeed soon appear in factories and warehouses. First, the company is integrating Pick technology into the Handle robot, which we previously saw autonomously moving boxes in one of its warehouses.

The tool, by the way, is independent, so it will probably appear in other Boston Dynamic robots in the future. And while the company is improving Handle (it is unknown when the company plans to begin commercial deliveries of this robot), it will begin selling the technology to third parties under the Boston Dynamics Pick System brand:
