Slackel 9.0, a distribution built on the foundations of the Slackware and Salix projects and fully compatible with their repositories, has been released. Slackel's key distinction is its use of a continuously updated Slackware-Current branch. The graphical environment is based on the MATE desktop environment. The bootable image, capable of running in Live mode, is 4.2 GB (i386 and x86_64). Installation on external USB drives is supported, with the ability to save changes to the same drive and update packages.
In the new release:
- The filling is synchronized with the Slackware Current branch and is shipped with the kernel Linux 6.18.37 for 64-bit systems and 6.12.94 for 32-bit systems.
- Instead of the Openbox window manager, the MATE desktop environment is used.
- Three installation modes are offered: full with the MATE desktop, browser, multimedia, and office applications; basic with a minimal graphical system, browser, and essential utilities; and stripped down with command-line tools.
- The following programs have been updated: libreoffice 26.2.4, firefox 152.0.3, thunderbird 140.12.0, pidgin 2.14.14, transmission 2.94, GIMP 3.2.4, exaile 4.2.1, smplayer 25.6.0, mpv 0.41.0, brasero 3.12.3.
