Release of the TeX distribution TeX Live 2021

The release of the TeX Live 2021 distribution kit, created in 1996 on the basis of the teTeX project, has been prepared. TeX Live is the easiest way to deploy a scientific documentation infrastructure, regardless of the operating system used. A DVD assembly (4.4 GB) of TeX Live 2021 has been generated for download, which contains a working Live environment, a complete set of installation files for various operating systems, a copy of the CTAN (Comprehensive TeX Archive Network) repository, and a selection of documentation in different languages (including Russian).

Among the innovations can be noted:

  • TeX and Metafont include changes suggested by Donald Knuth to address some little-known issues with the handling of '\tracinglostchars' and '\tracingmacros'.
  • In LuaTeX, the Lua interpreter has been updated to version 5.3.6.
  • The SOURCE_DATE_EPOCH environment variable has been added to the MetaPost GUI interpreter to ensure repeatable builds.
  • pdfTeX implements new "\pdfrunninglinkoff" and "\pdfrunninglinkon" primitives to disable link and footer generation. Dropped support for the poppler library - pdfTeX now always uses libs/xpdf.
  • Dvipdfmx has Ghostscript's safe mode (dvipdfmx-unsafe.cfg) enabled by default
