Yandex.Taxi will introduce a driver fatigue monitoring system

According to network sources, the Yandex.Taxi service has found a partner, together with which the driver fatigue monitoring system will be implemented. It will be VisionLabs, a joint venture between Sberbank and AFK Sistema's venture fund.

The technology will be tested on thousands of vehicles, including those used by the Uber Russia taxi service. The said system will restrict drivers from accessing new orders if they work too long. The cost of developing the technology that the companies will be testing has not been disclosed. In the past, representatives of Yandex.Taxi talked about plans to invest about 4 billion rubles in security technologies over the next three years.

The system under consideration is capable of independently assessing the driver’s condition, after which he will be warned or a restriction on access to orders will be introduced. The system is formed from an infrared camera with the appropriate software, which is mounted on the windshield. The camera monitors 68 points on the driver's face, determining the degree of fatigue by a number of characteristic features: the frequency and duration of blinking, head position, etc. Processing and analysis of the collected information can be carried out without connecting to the Internet.

Representatives of Yandex.Taxi say that in the future, the system for determining the level of fatigue can turn into a full-fledged market product that can be useful for different people, including truckers or drivers who regularly make long trips.

In Russia, in addition to VisionLabs, the Vocord companies, the Speech Technology Center, and NtechLab are also developing facial recognition technologies. Experts say that the technology for monitoring driver fatigue by eye movement and facial activity is not something new, it is quite well developed and reliable. Some automakers use similar solutions as additional options for their cars.
