The new Microsoft Edge will support 4K video streaming and Fluent Design

Microsoft is almost ready to officially introduce the Chromium-based Microsoft Edge browser. Early leaks have already given users a pretty clear idea of what to expect. However, it looks like the Redmond corporation has a couple of tricks up its sleeve.

The new Microsoft Edge will support 4K video streaming and Fluent Design

Chromium-based Microsoft Edge will reportedly support 4K video streaming. The corresponding flag was found deep in the browser settings. And this is both good and bad. The fact is that Microsoft Edge is the only browser that natively supports 4K video streaming with dynamic encryption. And it will only work in this mode on Windows 10, meaning older versions won't play such content. This will protect the content from copying.

As noted, Microsoft will use PlayReady DRM to support 4K streaming in the browser. This should give the company a competitive edge in the marketplace as the software giant hopes to increase its presence through a conglomeration with Google. As you know, Chrome now reigns in the browser market, which is why Microsoft uses its developments for its browser. Ordinary videos in 4K, for example from YouTube, are also played by other browsers.

In addition to supporting high-definition video, the new version of the browser is expected to support Fluent Design. This is indicated by a flag called "Fluent Controls". It is supposed to activate the updated design that Microsoft uses in Windows 10 and a number of other pre-installed core apps.

Its description says that when the flag is turned on, the design will change to be more in line with on-screen controls using the touch display. The flag itself is available in the list at edge://flags and is set by default. So far, this part of the project is at an early stage of development, so it's hard to say what the new product will look like in the release.

Recall that earlier there was a working assembly of Microsoft Edge, which you can already download and run. A stable version of the Chromium-based browser is expected to arrive later this year.
