Release of D7VK 1.12, a Direct3D 3-7 implementation on top of the Vulkan API

The D7VK 1.12 project has been released, developing the implementation of the Direct3D 3, 5, 6 and 7 graphics APIs proposed by Microsoft in 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999. D7VK works by translating calls to the Vulkan API and allows you to run in Linux Retro games based on the Direct3D 3, 5, 6, and 7 APIs. The project code is written in C++ and distributed under the Zlib license. The development is based on the d3d9 backend code from the DXVK project. D7VK converts Direct3D 3, 5, 6, and 7 APIs into Direct3D 9 calls, which are then translated into the Vulkan API. The developer does not intend to seek inclusion of D7VK in DXVK, as was the case with the Direct3D 8 and Direct3D 9 implementations on top of Vulkan.

In the new release:

  • A series of performance optimizations have been implemented, primarily affecting API code running on the CPU. D3D6 performance in 3DMark 99 Max increased from 70685 points in D7VK 1.2 to 75283 in D7VK 1.12, while D3D7 performance in 3DMark 2000 v1.1 increased from 45267 in D7VK 1.0 to 69566 in D7VK 1.12. In certain situations, these micro-optimizations significantly increased FPS on systems with weaker CPUs. For example, in Unreal Tournament, FPS increased from 256 to 484, while GPU load decreased from 37% to 18%.
  • Simplified implementation of Color Key-based transparency without using a full alpha channel.
  • In D3D6/5/3, color transformations during viewport clearing have been optimized.
  • To reduce the number of handles used, texture and material handles are now allocated when requested by the application, rather than when the texture or material is created.
  • The transition to work on top of the DXVK 3.0.1 release has been completed.
  • Fixes have been made to improve support for Matrox TechDemo 3D, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, and The Sims: Complete Collection.
