OmniOS Community Edition r151052 has been released. It is based on the work of the Illumos project, which continues to develop the OpenSolaris kernel, network stack, file systems, drivers, libraries, and basic system utilities. OmniOS is notable for providing full support for the bhyve and KVM, the Crossbow virtual network stack, the ZFS file system, and lightweight launchers Linux-containers. The distribution can be used for building scalable web systems, virtualization, and creating storage systems.
In the new release:
- The SMB client now supports SMB3 protocol extensions that provide encryption.
- OpenSSL library updated to version 3.3.2. Added provider with implementation of post-quantum encryption algorithms. Support for OpenSSL 1.0.x and 1.1.1 branches is declared obsolete.
- The following packages have been updated: GCC 14, bash 5.2.32, sudo 1.9.16, perl 5.40.0, openssh 9.9, bind 9.18.30, coreutils 9.5, vim 9.1.652, git 2.46.2, sqlite 3.46.1.
- Python 2 support has been deprecated. The python-27 package is retained for compatibility, but will no longer be updated.
- The standard C library now supports the FD_CLOFORK (close-on-fork) flag to close a file descriptor for child processes after calling the fork() function.
- Added new functions syncfs, pts_name_r, strerrordesc_np, strerrnorname_np, pthread_mutex_clocklock, pthread_rwlock_clockwrlock, pthread_rwlock_clockrdlock and pthread_cond_clockwait.
- For TCP, UDP, SCTP and IP sockets, the IP_MINTTL and IPV6_MINHOPCOUNT options have been implemented to specify the minimum TTL of packets (packets with a smaller TTL will be discarded). The SO_PROTOCOL option has been added, which is a POSIX analogue of the previously supported SO_PROTOTYPE option.
- Added support for the TCP_MD5SIG option with the implementation of an extension for transmitting an MD5 hash in a TCP segment (used for verification in the BGP protocol).
- Added support for setting OFD locks covering the entire file to LX zones containers. Disabled the TCP_INFO option for unix sockets.
- The ability to run the Bhyve hypervisor without enabling BARS (Base Address Register) on PCI devices has been added. The number of network adapters that can be added to a virtual machine running under Bhyve has been increased from 8 to 16.
- ZFS adds implementations of the fletcher-4 checksum algorithm, optimized using SSE, AVX2, and AVX-512 instructions. The AVL tree structure is used to track reference counters.
- The capabilities of many system utilities have been expanded, for example, support has been added to the rsync utility. IPv6.
- Some services that are not started successfully can now be put into a "degraded" state, which does not block dependencies from starting. For example, if the mount service fails to mount one of the filesystems, such a failure will no longer block the SSH service from starting.
- The ability to simultaneously supply cpqary3 and smrt drivers in the system, as well as to switch devices supported by both drivers to use the new smrt driver, has been provided.
- Support for the pkg.fmri.name attribute has been added to the IPS package manager.
- Added initial support for AMD EPYC Turin processors and AMD Zen 5 microarchitecture.
- Added support for LSI Fusion-MPT SAS38xx RAID controllers.
