Cloudflare has open-sourced its Cloudflare OS platform, designed for building personal apps using Vibe coding and for securely running these apps and AI agents. The code is written in TypeScript and distributed under the Apache 2.0 license.
Cloudflare OS is presented as a kind of operating system for AI-powered applications, with the workshop-backend package serving as the core, providing users with access to programs and devices (Gadget and Gatekeeper), implementing their isolation, and providing access control. Gatekeepers act as drivers, connecting users and AI agents with external services, gadgets act as processes, and blueprints (reference templates) act as executable files. The workshop-frontend serves as the user interface.
Cloudflare OS provides an alternative to the SaaS model, where instead of using shared centralized services, users are offered the opportunity to run their own isolated instances of applications. For example, instead of using services to create a presentation or generate a report, users are provided with their own application instances, which can be modified, extended, or adapted to specific needs using AI. Each application and AI agent runs in an isolated environment without direct internet access and, by default, cannot access services and external data, which are granted selectively through gatekeepers after explicit user permission.
Cloudflare OS combines:
- A workspace for interacting with AI agents, allowing you to create AI-powered applications, run them in an isolated environment, and solve assigned tasks using AI.
- A toolkit for securely granting AI agents and developed applications access to internal data and services (Gatekeepers). Gatekeepers act as intermediaries between AI agents, applications, and external services (GitHub, Slack, Google Drive, Jira, DBMS, etc.).
- A platform for creating, distributing, modifying, and sharing personal applications (gadgets).
