Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said Saturday that online material should be regulated under a system similar to existing rules used for the telecommunications and media industries.
Speaking at the Munich Security Conference in Germany, Zuckerberg said Facebook had improved its efforts to counter interference in online elections and was increasingly calling for regulation of social media companies.
“I think there should be regulation around harmful content... it's just a matter of what approach we should take to do it,” Mr. Zuckerberg said during a question-and-answer session. — Currently, there are two approaches applied to existing industries: we are talking about newspapers and mass media on the one hand, and also about telecommunications on the other, when it is simply about transferring data - no one is going to hold the phone responsible if the user will say something harmful over the phone line. I really think social media should be regulated as something in between.”
Facebook, Twitter, Google and other giants are coming under increasing pressure for failing to effectively crack down on governments and political groups that use online platforms to spread false and misleading information. Mr. Zuckerberg said his company currently employs 35 people to review online content and implement other security measures.
These teams and Facebook's automated technologies now suspend more than 1 million fake accounts every day, he said, adding that the vast majority are detected within minutes of registration. “I'm proud of the results, but we'll definitely have to remain vigilant,” the executive added.
