A new service for Linux kernel developers has been launched — people.kernel.org, aimed at filling the gap left by the closure of Google+. Many kernel developers, including Linus Torvalds, used to maintain blogs on Google+ and felt the need for a platform that allows occasional note publishing in a format different from the LKML mailing list after its shutdown. The people.kernel.org service is built […]
Canonical has released a statement reconsidering its plans regarding the discontinuation of support for the 32-bit x86 architecture in Ubuntu 19.10. After reviewing feedback from Wine developers and gaming platforms, it was decided to provide a build and supply a separate set of 32-bit packages in Ubuntu 19.10 and 20.04 LTS. The list of provided 32-bit packages will be prepared based on community requests and will include […]
Hello, Habr! Some time ago, I published a literary cycle called 'The Programmer's Ramblings' on Habr. The result turned out to be fairly decent. Thank you once again to everyone who left warm feedback. Now, I want to publish a new work on Habr. I wanted to write it in a unique way, but it ended up just like always: beautiful girls, a bit of homegrown philosophy, and very strange […]
It seems I have given dozens of presentations for colleagues, clients, and public speaking throughout my IT career. For many years, PowerPoint has been my natural and reliable choice for creating slides. However, this year, the situation changed dramatically. From February to May, I had the opportunity to speak at five conferences, and I needed to prepare slides for my presentations […]
Recently, TechCrunch announced the start of sales of 'grams' on July 10 at the Japanese exchange Liquid. Surprisingly, the world has fallen for the completely fictional story about a financial instrument from Telegram. Epigraph Major publications often publish rumors (information from verified sources), but you won't find another long-running saga like with TON, built entirely on leaks without any official information. Yes, it could have been […]
Steve Langasek from Canonical announced the intention to provide users of future Ubuntu releases with the ability to use libraries for the 32-bit x86 architecture by borrowing these libraries from Ubuntu 18.04. It is noted that support for i386 libraries will continue but will be frozen at the state of Ubuntu 18.04. Thus, Ubuntu 19.10 users will be able to install the libraries necessary to run 32-bit […]
Hello again! Today I would like to write a mini post and answer the question — 'Why remove wisdom teeth if they don't cause any discomfort?' and comment on the claim — 'My relatives and friends, dad/mom/grandpa/grandma/neighbors/pet had a tooth removed and everything went wrong. Absolutely everyone had complications and now no one wants to remove theirs.' First, I would like to say that complications […]
The final, most tedious reference article. Reading it for general knowledge may not make much sense, but when the time comes, it will be very helpful. Content of the series of articles Part 1: General architecture of the KTV network Part 2: Composition and form of the signal Part 3: Analog component of the signal Part 4: Digital component of the signal Part 5: Coaxial distribution network Part 6: RF signal amplifiers […]
Hello! My name is Vadim Madison, and I lead the development of Avito's System Platform. We've discussed several times how our company is transitioning from a monolithic architecture to a microservices one. It's time to share how we transformed our infrastructure to maximize the benefits of microservices and ensure we don't get lost in them. How PaaS helps us here, as we […]
After six months of development, the release of the console file manager Midnight Commander 4.8.23 has been published, available in source code under the GPLv3+ license. Key changes include: Significant acceleration in the deletion of large directories (previously, recursive deletion of directories was significantly slower than 'rm -rf' as each file was iterated and deleted individually); The dialog layout shown when attempting to overwrite an existing file has been redesigned. The button […]
The TinyWare project has prepared builds based on the 32-bit version of Slackware-Current, offered with 32- and 64-bit versions of the Linux kernel 4.19. The size of the ISO image is 800 MB. Key changes compared to the original Slackware include: Installation on four partitions: «/», «/boot», «/var», and «/home». The «/» and «/boot» partitions are mounted in read-only mode, while «/home» and «/var» are in […]
After more than two years of development, the GNU project has released GNU APL 1.8, an interpreter for one of the oldest programming languages — APL, fully compliant with the ISO 13751 («Programming Language APL, Extended») standard. The APL language is optimized for working with arrays of arbitrary nesting and supports complex numbers, making it popular for scientific calculations and data processing. […]
